Geography at St Giles


At St Giles we have shaped our Geography curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography:

  • Providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that encompasses the British Values and SMSC throughout.
  • Developing contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places.
  • Explaining the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world.
  • Teaching children to collect, interpret and communicate geographical information in a number of ways.


We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Children should:

  • Be taught to locate continents, countries, counties and cities on maps.
  • Be able to compare two regions and countries of the world, discussing the human and physical geography and using geographical vocabulary.
  • Describe and understand key aspects of physical and human geography.
  • Enjoy and love learning about Geography by gaining this knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.


In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in Geography, we are implementing a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school.

  • Staff follow the knowledge and skills progression document to create a curriculum overview for the year.
  • Staff ensure that the key knowledge and vocabulary receives the appropriate coverage within each Geography unit.
  • Children will revisit Rother Valley each year from Y1 to Y6 to enable them to develop fieldwork skills and deepen their understanding of how human and physical changes can affect their local environment.
  • Educational visits are planned where possible.
  • The local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice.
  • The orienteering course in the school grounds will be utilised to teach map skills in a practical way.
  • Appropriate resources are provided to add depth and understanding for each unit.
  • Quizzes and recall activities are planned into the timetable to ensure children’s learning is retained.
  • Learning is adapted to make it as accessible as possible for SEND pupils.


Our Geography Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions about their learning.
  • By analysing work in children’s books and matching this to the key knowledge that they need to remember at each stage of their learning, based on planning overviews.
  • An understanding in pupils of how each unit of work links to another.
  • Regular quizzes and recall sessions.
  • Assessed reflection of standards achieved against the planned outcomes.

At St Giles, we strive to ensure that children are equipped with Geographical knowledge and skills that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.

We want children to have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Geography, therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
